Redact PDF - Black Out Text and Destroy It

Drag black boxes over a PDF page and export it with the covered content destroyed.

Add a PDF

The text and pictures under a box are destroyed. The page is re-made as an image, so what was covered cannot be copied out, searched for, or recovered from the file.

Redact

Add a PDF to see its pages, then drag black boxes over anything that should go and export — all in this tab, nothing is uploaded.

About Redact PDF

This tool blacks out parts of a PDF on your own device. Drag a box over anything you need hidden, move it, delete it, add as many as you like, and each box stays on the page you drew it on. On export, a page carrying at least one box is rendered as a picture at the resolution you chose and the boxes are painted onto that picture, so the text and images under them are destroyed rather than covered - they cannot be selected, copied, searched or pulled back out of the file. That comes at a price, and it is worth knowing before you start: a redacted page loses all of its selectable text, not only the covered part, so it stops being searchable and stops working with screen readers. Pages with no boxes are copied through untouched and keep their real text. Document metadata - title, author, subject, keywords, producer and creator - is cleared on export, because those fields routinely repeat the very thing being hidden. What this does not touch is anything outside the visible page: attachments, embedded files and form field values are left as they were, so open the exported file and check it before you send it anywhere.

Features

100% Private

All processing happens in your browser. Your files are never uploaded to any server.

Content Destroyed

A redacted page is re-made as an image, so the text and pictures under a box are gone from the file, not covered by a shape.

Only What You Mark

Pages you leave alone are copied through untouched and keep their real, selectable text.

100% Free

How to use Redact PDF

  1. 1

    Add your PDF

Drop the PDF into the upload area, click to browse, or paste it with Ctrl+V. The first page appears on the canvas.

  2. 2

Drag boxes over what should go

Drag across the page to draw a black box. Move to other pages with the previous and next controls and draw there too - every box stays on the page you drew it on.

  3. 3

    Adjust or remove a box

Drag a box to move it, or focus it and nudge it with the arrow keys. Delete removes the selected box.

  4. 4

    Pick the output resolution

Choose 96, 150 or 300 DPI for the pages being redacted. 150 suits screen reading and ordinary printing; 300 suits small print and photographs.

  5. 5

    Export and check the result

Click Export PDF. Redacted pages are rendered one at a time with progress you can cancel, other pages are copied through untouched, and metadata is cleared. Open the downloaded file and confirm it before you share it.

Use cases

  • Blacking out a home address before sharing a scanned letter
  • Hiding salary lines in a contract going to a third party
  • Removing account numbers from a statement before attaching it
  • Covering a photograph or signature on a page you need to send

Privacy

The preview, the boxes and the export all happen in your browser using JavaScript. Your PDF is never uploaded to a server, nothing is logged, and closing the tab discards it. Note what the export does and does not do: content under a box is destroyed because the page becomes an image, a redacted page therefore loses all of its selectable text, and nothing outside the visible page - attachments, embedded files, form field values - is touched, so check the output before sharing it.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, this Redact PDF tool is 100% free with no hidden charges, no signup required, and no usage limits.
It is gone from the page. A page you put a box on is re-drawn as a picture at the resolution you chose, with the boxes painted onto that picture, and that picture is what ends up in the exported file. There is no text object left underneath, so the covered words cannot be selected, copied, searched or recovered from the file. This is the difference between this tool and drawing a black rectangle on top of a page in a PDF editor, where the text object survives under the shape and can be copied straight out.
Only the visible content of the pages you put boxes on is affected. It does not scrub file attachments, embedded files, form field values, or anything else outside the page content, and it does nothing at all to pages you left unmarked. Document metadata - title, author, subject, keywords, producer and creator - is cleared, but that is the extent of it. Open the exported PDF and check it yourself before you share it.
Because the whole page becomes an image, and an image has no text in it. That is the trade-off: destroying what is under a box means replacing the page, and the page's other text goes with it. The page will no longer be searchable and will no longer read out to a screen reader. Pages you did not redact are copied through untouched and keep their real, selectable text, which is why the tool only rasterises the pages that need it.
150 DPI is the default and is a reasonable match for reading on screen and for ordinary printing. Choose 96 DPI for a smaller file when the page is plain text and will only be read on screen. Choose 300 DPI when the page has small print, fine detail or photographs, or when it will be printed at full size - the file will be noticeably larger. The resolution only affects pages that are rasterised.
No. The preview, the boxes and the export all happen directly in your browser using JavaScript. The PDF never leaves your device, nothing is logged, and closing the tab discards it.
Yes to both. Boxes are drawn with a finger, the page fits the screen, and the options sit in a bottom sheet. Box positions are stored in the page's own coordinate space, so they land where you drew them on pages rotated 90, 180 or 270 degrees.
Not from the exported file - that is the point of it. Keep your original PDF if you may need the covered content again. The tool never changes the file you added; it writes a new one called <name>-redacted.pdf.
