Add Page Numbers to a PDF - Free and Private

Stamp page numbers onto a PDF, in the corner and format you choose.

Add a PDF

Page numbers

Add a PDF to see every page as a thumbnail. The numbers are drawn in this tab — nothing is uploaded.

About Add Page Numbers

This tool draws page numbers straight onto your PDF with pdf-lib, on your own device. Pick a position - bottom centre, either bottom corner, top centre or either top corner - and a format, from a bare number to Page 3 of 12. Set the first number if the document carries on from another one, nudge the font size and the margin, and use the page grid or the range box to number only part of the document. Pages that carry their own rotation are handled properly: the number is placed and turned so it sits in the corner you asked for and reads upright, exactly as a reader sees the page, and a fixed margin means A4, A3 and Letter pages in the same file all get the same gap from the edge.

Features

100% Private

All processing happens in your browser. Your files are never uploaded to any server.

Instant

Numbers are drawn straight onto the pages, so even a several hundred page PDF is done in a moment.

Rotation Aware

A sideways page still gets its number in the corner you picked, the right way up for the reader.

100% Free

No signup, no watermarks, no limits. Completely free to use forever.

How to use Add Page Numbers

  1. 1

    Add your PDF

Drop the PDF into the upload area, click to browse, or paste it with Ctrl+V. Every page appears as a thumbnail.

  2. 2

    Choose the pages

Every page is numbered by default. Type a range like 3- or click the thumbnails if only part of the document should be stamped.

  3. 3

    Set position and format

Pick one of six positions and a format, from a bare number to Page 3 of 12, then set the start number, font size and margin.

  4. 4

    Run it

Click Add page numbers. Progress is shown page by page and can be cancelled at any point.

  5. 5

    Download the result

Rename the output if you like, then save the numbered PDF to your device or hand it straight to another PDF tool.

Use cases

  • Numbering a contract or agreement before it goes out for signature
  • Paginating a scanned bundle for a court, tender or audit filing
  • Continuing the numbering in the second half of a report you split
  • Adding Page 1 of 12 to a printed handout so loose sheets can be reordered

Privacy

Page numbers are drawn in your browser using JavaScript. Your PDF is never uploaded to a server, nothing is logged, and closing the tab discards it.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, this Add Page Numbers tool is 100% free with no hidden charges, no signup required, no watermarks, and no usage limits.
Absolutely. The page numbers are drawn directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your file is never uploaded to any server, so nothing leaves your device.
Yes. Set the start number and the first page you chose gets that number, with each following page counting up from it. That is what you want when a document carries on from another one, or when the cover page should not be counted.
Yes. Type a range like 3- or 2-10 in the pages box, or click the thumbnails to build it. Only those pages are stamped, and the numbering starts from your start number on the first of them.
They are numbered correctly. The tool reads each page's own rotation and places the number so it lands in the corner you asked for and reads upright as the page appears on screen, rather than sideways on the wrong edge.
The margin is measured from the edge of each page, so an A4 page next to an A3 page or a Letter page all get the number the same distance in from the edge.
Helvetica, one of the fonts built into the PDF format itself. Nothing is downloaded and no font file is embedded, so the numbers add almost nothing to the file size and open the same way everywhere.
No. A password protected PDF has to be unlocked first. The tool says so plainly when you drop one in, rather than failing silently.
