SDE 1

Newton School is seeking a product-minded SDE 1 to build and scale production web experiences for its ed-tech platform. The role focuses on frontend development using React and Next.js, with strong emphasis on performance, responsive design, accessibility, state management, reliability, and user experience. Key Responsibilities: - Build and ship polished web experiences using React and Next.js. - Develop reusable components and complete product flows. - Improve Core Web Vitals, rendering performance, state management, reliability, accessibility, and responsiveness. - Build developer-facing product surfaces for coding playgrounds, proctoring, and AI-powered learning experiences. - Convert designs into production-ready interfaces with attention to interaction details and edge cases. - Review code, debug issues, fix bugs, and simplify complex implementations. - Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and engineers. - Contribute ideas and solutions in a high-ownership startup environment. - Maintain clean, scalable, and maintainable frontend code.

Required Skills: - 1–2 years of professional experience building and shipping production web applications. - Strong JavaScript fundamentals. - Strong TypeScript fundamentals. - Strong HTML and CSS skills. - Strong React.js knowledge. - Strong Next.js knowledge. - Experience with Redux or Redux Toolkit. - Understanding of modern frontend architecture. - Strong debugging and problem-solving skills. - Attention to detail. - Working knowledge of Git. - Understanding of collaborative development workflows. - Clear communication skills. - Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving team. Preferred Skills: - Frontend projects available on GitHub. - Strong foundation in Data Structures and Algorithms. - Experience using AI coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot. - Experience with Jest. - Experience with React Testing Library. - Experience with Playwright or Cypress. - Knowledge of web performance optimization. - Knowledge of web accessibility. - Understanding of design systems and frontend tooling.
