About Regex Tester

Regular expressions are powerful but hard to read back once written. This tester highlights every match live as you type, breaks each match down into its numbered and named capture groups, and explains a valid pattern in plain English so you can see exactly what each token does. It also has a replace mode, a common pattern library and freeze protection against catastrophic backtracking.

Features

Live match highlighting

Matches are marked in the text as you type, alternating colours for adjacent hits.

Plain-English explain

Every token in a valid pattern gets a description, indented to show nested groups.

Match & replace

Switch to replace mode with $1, $<name> and $& support, previewed live.

Pattern library & cheatsheet

Load a ready-made pattern for email, URL, UUID and more, or insert tokens from the cheatsheet.

Freeze protection

Matching runs in a background worker with a timeout, so a runaway pattern never locks the tab.

Private share links

Copy a link that carries your pattern and test text in the URL hash. Nothing is sent to a server.

How to use Regex Tester

  1. 1

    Enter your pattern

Type or paste a regex pattern into the Pattern field and toggle flags like g, i or m.

  2. 2

    Add test text

Paste the text you want to test against. Matches highlight live as you type.

  3. 3

    Review the matches

Expand a match to see its index, start-end span, and every numbered and named capture group.

  4. 4

    Read the explanation

Open the explain panel to see what each token in your pattern does, in plain English.

  5. 5

    Try replace mode

Switch to Replace to preview a substitution using $1, $<name> or $&.

  6. 6

    Export or share

Copy the pattern as a JavaScript literal, RegExp constructor or Python code, or generate a private share link.

Use cases

  • Writing and debugging a validation pattern for a form field
  • Testing a log-parsing regex against sample log lines before deploying it
  • Building a find-and-replace pattern with capture groups for a data migration
  • Understanding a regex found in someone else's code via the explain panel
  • Sharing a working pattern with a teammate via a private link

Privacy

Matching runs in a Web Worker inside your browser using the JavaScript RegExp engine. Your pattern and test text are never uploaded to a server. The share link stores them in the URL hash, which browsers never send to a server either.

Frequently asked questions

The JavaScript RegExp engine, the same one that runs in Chrome, Firefox and Node. Lookbehind, named groups and Unicode property escapes are all supported, but syntax specific to other flavours (like Python or PCRE) may behave differently.
g finds every match instead of stopping at the first. i ignores letter case. m makes ^ and $ match line starts/ends instead of just the whole string. s lets . match newlines. u treats the pattern as Unicode code points. y matches only from the current position without skipping ahead.
Some patterns can backtrack exponentially on certain inputs, a problem called catastrophic backtracking. A classic example is (a+)+$ against a long string with no match at the end. This tool runs matching in a background worker and stops it after one second so a pattern like that cannot freeze the page.
No. Matching runs entirely in your browser using the JavaScript RegExp engine. Nothing is sent to a server. The share link feature stores your pattern and text in the URL hash, which browsers never send to a server either.
Use $1, $2 and so on for numbered groups, $<name> for a named group like (?<year>\d{4}), and $& for the whole match. The replace preview updates live so you can check the output before copying it.
