Intermediate Backend Engineer

GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer to build and improve production-grade backend services and scalable systems. The role focuses on backend development, APIs, databases, cloud-native infrastructure, observability, and distributed systems. The engineer will work with Go and modern backend technologies while contributing to reliable, performant, and secure production applications. Key Responsibilities: - Build and maintain production-grade backend services. - Develop and maintain APIs and backend components. - Develop and maintain production Go services. - Design and maintain scalable database solutions using PostgreSQL. - Work with database schema evolution. - Build systems using queues, messaging, caching, and event-driven workflows. - Implement observability using metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerts. - Work with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD, and cloud deployment workflows. - Improve system performance, reliability, and security. - Collaborate with engineering teams on backend features and improvements.

Required Skills: - Experience with production Go services. - Strong backend engineering fundamentals. - Experience developing APIs. - Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm. - Experience with CI/CD and cloud deployment. - Experience with PostgreSQL and database schema evolution. - Knowledge of caching, queues, messaging, and event-driven systems. - Experience with production observability practices. - Understanding of metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerts. - Understanding of concurrency. - Experience with gRPC. - Strong problem-solving skills. - Ability to design and work with scalable backend services. Preferred Skills: - Experience with Rust, particularly for systems, security, performance, or platform development. - Experience with cloud-native systems. - Experience designing scalable backend services. - Experience with production observability and reliability practices. - Experience working with distributed systems.
