Repair PDF – Rebuild a Damaged File in Your Browser

Rebuild a damaged PDF's structure in your browser - broken xref tables, trailers, and more.

Add a PDF

Repair

Add a PDF that won't open or looks damaged. Nothing is uploaded - the check and the rebuild both happen in this tab.

About Repair PDF

This Repair PDF tool attempts to rebuild a damaged PDF entirely inside your browser tab. It first checks the file under a strict parse; if that fails, it retries with a far more tolerant parser that can work around broken or mis-offset cross-reference tables, malformed trailers, and trailing garbage after %%EOF. It then writes a fresh, well-formed copy. It cannot invent content that isn't in the file's bytes, so a file that is truncated or missing data outright cannot be fully recovered.

Features

How to use Repair PDF

  1. 1

    Upload your damaged PDF

Drag it in or click to browse. Even a file that fails to parse elsewhere is accepted here.

  2. 2

    Run the repair

Click Repair PDF. The tool checks the file under a strict parse, then a tolerant one if needed.

  3. 3

    Read the diagnostics

See whether the file was already valid, was rebuilt, or was beyond repair, plus pages recovered and size before/after.

  4. 4

    Download the rebuilt file

If a copy was produced, save it to your device, or rename it first.

Use cases

  • Rebuilding a PDF that throws a 'file is damaged' error in your reader
  • Fixing a PDF with a broken or mis-offset cross-reference table
  • Cleaning trailing garbage appended after a PDF's end marker
  • Checking whether a PDF is genuinely corrupted or merely encrypted

Privacy

Parsing and rebuilding both run in your browser using JavaScript. Your PDF is never uploaded to a server, nothing is logged, and closing the tab discards it.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, this Repair PDF tool is 100% free with no hidden charges, no signup required, no watermarks, and no usage limits.
This tool can only rebuild structure that is genuinely present in the file's bytes - a broken cross-reference table, a malformed trailer, or trailing garbage after %%EOF. It cannot invent content that was never written to the file. If a strict and a tolerant parse both fail, the damage goes beyond what a rebuild can fix, and no file is produced. Try requesting the file again from its original source.
No. An encrypted PDF is not treated as damaged - this tool detects the password protection and tells you so, but it does not decrypt files. Remove the password with the original owner's permission first, then repair it if it's also damaged.
No. The tool reads every page it can recover from the file and writes them into the rebuilt copy unchanged. It reports exactly how many pages were recovered so you can check the count matches what you expect.
Absolutely. Parsing and rebuilding both happen directly in your browser. Your file is never uploaded to any server, ensuring complete privacy.
No. This is a structural repair tool, not OCR. It rebuilds the PDF's internal structure - it does not read, recognise, or reconstruct scanned text or images.
